Context

The Global Business Development & Ventures team ("BD") is responsible for driving Diageo's inorganic growth ambition and creating shareholder value by: (a) identifying, pursuing, and implementing M&A opportunities against our core hunting grounds; monitoring, assessing and completing Group-wide large-scale M&A opportunities and partnerships; (b) assessing and implementing other tactical M&A opportunities, including responsibility for Diageo's industry-leading venturing arm, Distill Ventures; and (c) actively handling the portfolio of Diageo brands and companies.

BD is organized as a central team mostly based in London, with the ability to facilitate an effective partnership with local business teams. In addition, there are a number of team members across NAM and APAC, all working collaboratively with the London team and other regions as needed.

The BD team needs to work flexibly driven by the strategic priorities and, at times, tight deadlines set by both Diageo Executive team, market Executive teams, and external factors.

Key Accountabilities:

Business Development Manager:

  • Support execution of BD and Ventures pipeline including negotiation of key contractual parameters and protections progressively working to executing independently
  • Support the building and interrogation of a business plan, identifying value drivers of a business and identify and run appropriate sensitivities
  • Support the structuring of transactions with input from tax, legal and treasury and manage the approval process
  • Support in the strategic, governance, and financial priorities and day-to-day operations of BD and Ventures
  • Support development of regional BD priorities with regional presidents, finance directors and market GMs, including researching and analysing potential acquisition targets

Market Complexity:

This role will be focused in the Global BD agenda, which may include supporting multi-market initiatives globally, all with varying level of complexity in terms commercial and regulatory environments.

To be successful in the role requires:

Strong analytical and financial skills

  • Ability to build valuation models from a blank sheet - including DCF, comparables and multiples, sensitivities etc;
  • Ability to identify key value drivers of any business;
  • Ability to analyse business plans and commercial/financial performance and generate insights and learnings;
  • Basic accounting knowledge, including ability to perform EP, EPS accretion/dilution analyses;
  • Ability to structure transactions with input from tax, legal and treasury, and support managing the approval process.

Leadership and project management responsibilities

  • Develop and promote effective and efficient BD processes and ways of working liaising with regional management teams
  • Display cross-functional acumen and founder management
  • Share knowledge, and leverage and apply best practices, including insights and experiences within the team and in wider business context.
  • Must be able to work independently, supported by BD Directors and Senior Managers.
  • Must be credible and persuasive with in-market exec teams, Regional Presidents and other Diageo executives.
  • Candidates must demonstrate the ability to create and leverage relationships both within and outside their teams/organisations.

Qualifications and experience required

  • Bachelor's Degree level with strong academic record
  • MBA or ACA / CFA desirable
  • Desirable to have Business Development (M&A/Ventures) experience within industry, banking or consultancy environment; alternatively strategy or commercial finance experience
  • Desirable (but not essential) to have experience in venturing, with a focus on tech, digital and ESG
  • Experience in project management, in particular bringing together internal multi-disciplinary teams
  • Self starter, highly committed, and able to deliver against goals with minimal supervision
  • Clear and succinct communicator both culturally aware and adaptable
